Access Course Outline

Below we have outlined a provisional plan to give you a flavour of what will be achieved within each week of the course.

Week 1
Gives you the opportunity to try a variety of activities like Raft building, Abseiling, Archery, Scrambling, Gorge walking, Climbing and a mountain day. This will also allow you to get to know your fellow course members while having fun together. The end of the week will then consist of your RYA Powerboat course - so you should have your first qualification within your first week.

Week 2
This maybe your first experience of sailing, but come the end of the week we will have you sailing confidently in wayfarers and Pico’s having learnt the basic skills in a Hawk. You will have also gained your RYA Level 1 Dinghy sailing award and for those who have sailed before your Level 2 if enough skill/experience is achieved.

Week 3
Introduction to rock climbing, building knowledge and confidence on the rock and belaying. 3 day walking expedition to Yorkshire, with sessions learning about 'you and the outdoors' in the evenings.

Week 4-8
The following weeks will then focus on achieving the basic skills in Walking, Paddlesport, Rock Climbing and Mountain Biking, getting out in the national park - exploring the lakes, crags, singletrack, fells, becks and mountains. Alongside this there will be a chance to do a high and low ropes course, raft building, archery and more gorge walking. You will also complete a 2-day first aid course.

Climbing: visiting climbing crags around the park and with a trip to Kendal Climbing Wall. You will learn new techniques in how to become a better climber which will improve you confidence on the rock. You will learn how to tie a handful of knots and use them in real situations. By the end of the week you will have the buzz for climbing with the knowledge and skills to visit the local climbing walls and venues in you own free time.

Paddlesport: You will develop your personal canoeing and kayaking skills to become first and foremost an all-round paddler whilst working towards the BCU 2 Star. You will become confident in rescuing other course members and yourselves, and will learn how to paddle in a straight line with grace and style. You will embark on an overnight expedition using a canoe to transport you and you equipment along one of the Lake District magical lakes.

Hill walking: you will learn the necessary skills to take you and your friends into the mountains with confidence. We will cover map and compass work, route planning, emergencies procedures, weather, access and conservation. These days will also provide good evidence and experience for your ML log book. We will also cover night navigation and have an overnight camp.

Mountian Biking: exploring and developing your biking skills, knowledge and log books. We start off gently looking at position, braking, maintenance, speed and nutrition. You will experience the highs and lows of some amazing cross country trails and also visit the manmade trails of Whinlatter.

Week 9-11
As we hit the short winter days we will introduce a mix of outdoor sessions and afternoon site-based learning. During these weeks there will be the introduction of learning how to lead and set up for personal climbing, learning to roll in pool sessions, FSRT Assessment, UKCC Level 1 Paddlesport Training, moving onto moving water in Canoes and Kayaks, biking skill development, bike maintenance, peer-to-peer leading and much more.

As a final flourish before the Christmas break there will be a 2 day climbing wall trip to Blackpool and Manchester climbing walls.

Week 12-16
The basic techiniques may have been learnt but there is still plenty of log book days to tick off, skills to develop and trips to be done. These weeks will include the UKCC Level 1 Assessment, Trail Cycle Leader Training, Climbing Wall Leader Training, BCU 3* training and assessment, hill navigation tests, river trips and even more playing in the outdoors. You will be expected to choose, plan and lead days out with your fellow course members as well as taking part in those lead by others.

Week 17
A week of consolidation to review the skills that have been learnt, gain group experience delivering an activity to members of the public and the opportunity of doing some work experience at one of the local centres.

Week 18
The penultimate week of the course will be your summer mountain leader training. This will be run over 6 days. During Mountain Leader Award Courses you will develop group management skills, the ability to navigate in all conditions, gain an understanding of how to deal with mountain hazards and increase your awareness of environmental issues. There is also an expedition element to the syllabus.

Week 19
Spending time in the hills of Dumfries and Galloway. You will live and experience life in a Pod and take your confidence and riding skills to a new level on a variety of the 7 Stanes Mountain Bike trails. We explore the high mountains of Galloway either by foot or by bike and experience the delights of a Scottish bothy. We will then return home to recap on the whole experience and debrief before saying fond farewells.
